Expert Tips to Transform Your Home with Designer Furniture
It is normal for most people to do deep cleaning and change their décor to reflect the occasion. For some people, this includes adding a new piece of designer furniture or two to reinvigorate the space. The right furniture can transform a room any time of the year. With the right piece, you can completely reinvigorate your home.
4 Ways to Decorate Your Home with Designer Furniture
Sectional
This is one of the most beloved pieces of furniture for a good reason. It provides plenty of seating for relaxing or entertaining and can be set up in multiple configurations that can fit nearly any room. You also have a wide selection of fabrics to choose from, including leather or velvet in neutral and bright colours. A sectional helps define a room and creates borders within the space.
It is also important to ensure that the size of the sofa is proportional to the size of the room to avoid overcrowding. For a small space, try incorporating a settee, loveseat, or chaise instead. The front of the sectional, not including the chaise, should also be placed 7 to 8 feet away from the TV for comfortable viewing.
Ottoman
The versatility of a multi-functional ottoman has made it an increasingly popular addition in most homes. They are a comfortable footstool that allows you to kick back and relax and can also be used as a coffee table. When used with trays, a large, firm ottoman makes the perfect surface to offer coffee and other refreshments.
A sturdy ottoman can also be a convenient portable seating area that’s 3 for when you have guests over. Some ottomans have hidden storage that can store anything from remotes, gaming consoles, board games, fleece blankets and more when not in use. Keep in mind that your ottoman does not have to match your sofa. Instead, you can opt for something fun and funky that complements the room.
Hall Table
The front hallway helps form the first impression visitors have of your home. Updating the front hallway with a stunning chest or table can completely transform the feel of the home in an instant. Choose a statement piece with metallic accents, a gorgeous bright colour, distressed wood, or intricate detailing to draw interest. You can also add a vase or a bouquet for an even more stunning effect.
Mirror
A mirror reflects light and opens a space beautifully. Adding mirrors in the right location can completely transform a space and have a huge impact. The living room, dining room, stair landing, hallways and even the kitchen are great locations to add a mirror. There are many creative options to choose from with unique shapes and sizes. Starburst designs and circles are currently the most popular options.
The right size and placement of the mirror will make all the difference. The mirror’s width should be 2/3 to ¾ the width of the item below it when hung above an architectural feature or piece of furniture. The effect creates a triangular shape with the furniture and the mirror.
If the piece is hung on a small wall or an empty section of a large wall, the comparative width of the mirror should be between ½ and ¾. You also need to center the mirror in the middle of the architectural feature or furniture below it, the wall section, or the entire wall. If you have multiple mirrors, center them as a group, including the negative spaces.
Ideally, you want the mirrors to be at eye level when placed on an empty wall. When hung above an element, the bottom edge of the mirror should be 5 to 10 inches above the item below. Lastly, ensure that everything is proportionate to the space. These guidelines also apply to artwork.
Useful Tips to Incorporate Designer Furniture into Your Home
How do you transform a room into a stylish and functional space? Below are some tips on good interior design and intelligent space planning to help you make your home beautiful and relaxing.
Space Assessment
Start by assessing the space. Identify the focal points and walkthroughs that will act as a guide to finding the perfect position for the foundational furniture. Make use of the room’s geometry to center large items such as the sofa and the area rug to the key architectural features to make the space feel intentional and balanced. Allow a minimum of 3 feet walkthrough space through the room to ensure that people can move around with ease and make the area feel open.
If your room does not have an obvious focal point, create one by adding interesting items such as a media center, bookcase, electric fireplace, a credenza, or media hub. Ensure that all the windows and major sightlines are not blocked. You can opt for a low-profile sofa or a chaise if blocking a window is unavoidable.
Coffee Tables
When selecting a coffee table, ensure that everyone can easily access it. Ideally, the length of the coffee table should be ½ to 2/3 the length of the sofa, while the height should be approximately the same as the seat. The width will depend on the space available and the other elements within the seating area. A narrow room will require a narrow table, while a larger room will work better with a large, wide coffee table. The table should be centred to the middle of the sofa or to the negative space in case of a sectional. Leave 14 to 18 inches clearance space from the couch but keep the table within easy arm’s reach of all seats.
Side Tables
Ideally, side tables should be approximately the same height as the sofa or chair arm. With an armless sofa, the adjacent side table should create a balanced look with the couch or the back of the chair. The height should not exceed 8 inches above the seat.
The side table should be centred to the middle of the sofa or sectional and placed several inches away from its foundation piece. Having a pair of matching side tables on either side of the sofa creates an elegant and balanced look. You can also use one side table and then balance out the other side with a tall potted plant or floor lamp if the space does not allow two tables.
Console Tables
If you intend to place a console table behind a sofa or sectional, it should be 2/3 to ¾ of its length. The same applies when placed against a small wall or a section of the wall. If placed behind a sofa, it needs to be the same height as the back or slightly shorter, but never taller. Center the console table to the middle of the sofa or wall. You can position it against the back of the couch or the walls baseboard but with clearance on either side to avoid overcrowding.
Bookcases & Cabinets
Choose an open-sided or narrow bookcase for small rooms to maintain sightlines and keep the space feeling open and airy. When placed against a small wall or a section of a wall, the bookcase should be 2/3 to ¾ the width of the wall. This is a great way to add function and vertical interest to a space.
When selecting a vertical piece, bookcases and cabinets included, ensure that the height does not exceed the top frames of the room’s windows and doors as it will look disproportionate. Additionally, these pieces should be centred to the middle of the wall or wall section they are placed against with multiple pieces centred as a group.
