What You Need to Know When Looking for a Custom Furniture Builder
Just because a furniture piece is labeled “custom made furniture” does not necessarily mean it was made using high-quality products or even quality craftsmanship. Furniture, just like any other purchasable item, is only as good as the materials and builder behind it. If you want to enhance the look of your home with a custom built furniture piece, you need to know what to look for.
Custom Made Furniture Should Never be a Knock Off
There are numerous custom built pieces out there that are mere knock-offs of other designers. A true custom designer will typically not copy or borrow another’s design – it is not good business practice. If you find a designer that does not simply copy designs, you most likely have just found a quality artisan. On the other hand, if you do have a great piece that you love and want an identical one created, you need a skilled designer who can do the job and in fact, make you an even better piece!
Why Custom Built?
There is a common misconception that custom made furniture costs more than mass-manufactured, but this is not the case. Custom furniture is just as affordable as those high-end, mass produced items you find in the store. The only difference is that a custom built piece, done with high-quality materials, most likely will last you longer than one that is not custom crafted.
How to Find a Quality Custom Built Furniture Piece
To ensure you are purchasing a quality custom made furniture piece, you need to examine it closely. Some things to look for include:
- Work Process – Inquire about the furniture store’s work process. You want to know what they do to create custom pieces (such as interviewing their clients, measuring the space, etc.) that match the expectations of their clients. After all, you are ordering a custom piece, so you want to ensure it is customized to what you want.
- Lead Time – Custom furniture will take longer than an item that is mass-produced, but you still should inquire about how long it will take. If you have a specific deadline in mind, let the furniture builder know and see if they can accommodate that. At the same time, you do not want to rush the process and potentially compromise the result.
- Materials – Most importantly, you want to know what type of materials they use to complete their work and where they acquire their materials. Artisan furniture should be made using exceptional wood and never include particle board or engineered wood products.

I haven’t been able to find a good piece of furniture to go in my living room and someone suggested that I get something made instead of trying to search. I think that would be a great idea! That is great to know that custom furniture is just as affordable as the high-end pieces at the store. I would love to have something that is uniquely mine. That would be great! Thank you for all the tips and information!
There is a lot that a customer can look for when choosing a furniture maker and I love that your article brings up some of them. I particularly like that you recommend choosing a furniture maker that uses good materials. After all, any piece of furniture you buy needs to be made from quality materials so that it will last as long as it can.
I totally agree that one should ask about the type of materials that are used and where those materials will be acquired if one will choose to have their furniture custom-made. My wife mentioned that she wants our dining room furniture to be custom built. I’ll get in touch with an expert right away and ask about their materials so that I can gauge if they will be providing the best quality product.
